Why FG Reinstated Obasa as Lagos Speaker

A security source has disclosed that the federal government played a key role in the reinstatement of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. According to the source, Obasa’s impeachment was deemed illegal because it occurred when the House was not in session, and only a legitimate speaker has the authority to convene proceedings.

Despite the matter being in court, the federal government reportedly took action without waiting for a legal ruling, considering the impeachment a violation of due process. Obasa, who was removed while on vacation in the U.S., challenged his removal and eventually reclaimed his seat on Thursday, February 27, leading a group of supporters to the Assembly complex before presiding over a session with a handful of lawmakers.

His removal had been backed by a two-thirds majority of the Assembly, with members accusing him of high-handedness and financial mismanagement. Mojisola Meranda was elected as his replacement, but sources say she was pressured by APC leaders to step down. Security authorities later withdrew Meranda’s security details and reinstated Obasa’s, further confirming the federal government’s involvement.
